The master bedroom is large, measuring about 20 feet by 20 feet. But as expansive as that may seem, it needs to serve dual purposes: a plush, comfortable escape for Mom and Dad and a place for the entire family, kids included, to kick back and watch television before bed.
Shannon Intagliata, 40, and Beth Intagliata, 39, of Oakville, decided it was time for a makeover. So they called in professional help.
Interior designer Cheryl Ransom of June Roesslein Interiors in Chesterfield took on the task. Ransom decided everything in the master bedroom must go, except the six-year old taupe carpeting, moldings, doors, door casings and baseboards, all in great shape. She then furnished the room to allow for more seating.
Now the master bedroom is both elegant and livable for Shannon and Beth and their four children: Maddy, 14, Maura, 11, Maeve, 8, and Max, 6.
Steps of the dramatic redesign
1 Ransom painted the off-white room Mochachino from the Behr paint collection available at Home Depot. The warm color was ideal for coordinating with earth-tone accent pieces.
2 She then replaced the queen size bed with a king. An upholstered large-scale headboard and footboard with a chocolate colored mohair fabric was installed. The headboard and footboard were ordered through June Roesslein Interiors, manufactured by Lee. Now, the bed is perfectly scaled for the room size, she says.
3 The bedding includes a new olive comforter, large decorative Euro shams with a leaf pattern and an assortment of tossed pillows with faux fur trim. The custom-made pillows are available from GQS Inc. Designer Workroom, designed by Ransom.
Marimba wood night stands in a Java finish, by Stanley, took the place of the round decorative night tables on either side of the bed. The new Stanley night stands are available from June Roesslein Interiors and provide drawer space and storage.
4 The old chest located at the end of the bed was replaced with a daybed covered in a green quilted velvet. The daybed is a perfect way for the kids to kick back and relax. The Lee daybed is available from June Roesslein Interiors.
Beth originally had a reading chair with a small ottoman in one corner of the master bedroom. It was replaced with two upholstered arm chairs with striped and leafy fabrics by Lee. An occasional table and ottoman, also by Lee, was added to this area to maximize the seating space and provide a welcoming area.
5 Ransom installed horizontal striped, floor-length fabric panels on the two windows, creating the illusion of higher ceilings.
6 A large entertainment center made of Marimba wood in a Java finish, by Stanley, now holds the new 52-inch flat screen television.
7 Shannon's small chest of drawers and Beth's small dresser were replaced with a large Marimba wood mirror/dresser combination by Stanley. The new dresser offered nearly the same amount of storage, and what didn't fit was moved into the walk-in closet.
8 For the finishing touches, Ransom introduced other patterns into the master bedroom including a star-shaped lamp, teapot-print wall hangings and floral arrangements filled with wheat grass, daylilies and hydrangeas.
The result
Beth and Shannon love their new master bedroom. Shannon loves the new TV, and Beth is happy because she can read while keeping an eye on the kids as they watch television before going to bed. Beth says the transformation is an ideal way for the family to spend a little quality time together just before bedtime. |
